Formatting Guide

This formatting guide is for your help so that you can create an ebook that looks good and easy to read. It will ensure that your ebook does not create problems for the readers; otherwise readers may reject your book.

Once your manuscript is converted into digital form (get your book DTP-ed), then get your ebook on a word file.

Proofread the ebook

WE DO NOT PROOFREAD THE EBOOK YOU SEND US. So, please proofread the ebook before you send it to us.

Types of Formats

AssamKart accepts only one format – DOC/DOCX (.doc/.docx)

Word (DOC or DOCX)

AssamKart accepts most DOC & DOCX files for eBook conversion; however, some files which contain complex formatting may not convert well. For getting the best formatting of your ebook, use our Simple Formatting Guide.

You should use the “Page Break” feature in Word to create intentional page breaks. It will help you to end a chapter, which will result in a smoother transition and better reading experience.

You can add images in your ebook using the ‘Insert’ function in Word. Do not use the copy/paste function.

Please send the complete ebook in one file only.

Styling

Select all the text and then click on the down arrow next to “Paragraph.” A pop-up window will open. In the “line spacing” section select “1.5 lines” and then make the “Before” and “After” setting 0 (zero). This will give your book a line spacing of 1.5 lines, which will make the book look better.

Heading

Use an Unicode Font like Kalpurush and size 20

Subheading

Use an Unicode Font like Kalpurush and size 18

Chapters

To make the book look better, after each chapter, insert a pagebreak. Place the cursor where you want the pagebreak and then go to INSERT and then click on “Page Break.”  The pagebreak will be automatically applied to the page.

Building Your book

Word is a simple but very useful tool in building your ebook.

The following tips below will ensure an excellent eBook presentation.

File Format

Save your content in DOC (.doc or .docx) format.

Tables

If you need to use tables in your ebook, then you can do so. In MS Word, insert tables by selecting “Insert Table.”

Font

Use an Unicode Font like Kalpurush. You can use any Unicode font for Assamese script.

Headers and Footer

DO NOT use headers and footers in your ebook document.

Layout

You can use indentations, bold characters, italics and headings, as you want them to translate into your ebook. Do not use special fonts, because they may not transfer well in the final ebook.

Page Breaks

As mentioned, you need to enter a page break at the end of every chapter. This will ensure that your ebook text does not run together. To insert a page break in MS Word, click “Insert” at the top menu bar and select “Page Break.”

Using Images

You need to insert images in JPEG (or .jpeg) format. Center align your images. To insert, select “Insert” > “Picture” > then locate and select the file.

Spellcheck and Grammar

Do the proofreading of the ebook before sending to us. Otherwise, your ebook will not look professional and your readers may not like it at all. You also need to ensure that your grammar is correct.

Creating Front Matter

Front matter is the starting pages of your ebook. It generally includes a Title Page, Copyright Page, Dedication, Preface, and Prologue. You should at least add a Title Page at a minimum to make it look professional.

Title Page

Center the title page content. Title of the ebook should be on top and Author Name below that, for example

The Cavern and Other Stories

By Bhabendra Nath Saikia

-Insert Page Break Here-

To insert a page break in Word, click “Insert” at the top menu bar and select “Page Break.”

Copyright Page

This page normally follows the Title Page. Insert a page break after the Copyright details.

Dedication

If you have a customized Dedication, it should follow the Copyright page.

Don’t forget to Insert a page break.

Preface

If you have a Preface, it should follow the Dedication. Don’t forget to Insert a page break.

Prologue

If your book includes a Prologue, it should follow the Preface. Don’t forget to Insert a page break.

Formatting Text

Once you complete the front matter, you can start working on the  rest of your text.

Do not forget to insert a page break after the last sentence of each chapter in the book to prevent chapters from running together. It will improve the reading experience of the reader.

Paragraphs

If you want to add alignment to your book paragraph starting, then you can do so manually. While manually indenting paragraphs in your book, DO NOT use tab-spacing. Instead, you should use the Word-default Paragraph Formatting to indent paragraphs. There are two ways in which you can indent paragraphs:

1. Click on “Page Layout”, and specify the amount of indentation in the “Indent” option.

2. Use the ruler at the top of the page to change the indentation. If you don’t see a ruler in your Word document, click on “View” and check the Ruler option.

Creating an Active Table of Contents

Avoid using Page numbers in your ebook. The digital content at AssamKart is resizable and so the number of pages within the book can change as the text scales. But you should have an active Table of Contents (without page numbers) as it makes navigation easier for the readers.

On a PC, you can use Microsoft Word’s in-built Table of Contents creator to create an active TOC for your book. More information can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285059

On a Mac, you’ll need to create a Table of Contents manually using the Hyperlink and Bookmark functions.

Creating Back Matter

Back matter consists of the last pages in your book which provides additional information the reader should know about, such as Bibliographies, Appendices, Notes or Glossaries.

Images

Use the “Insert” function in word to insert images. Do not use the copy paste functions. Place the cursor where you want the image and then go to “INSERT” and then click on “Picture” to insert and image.

Please use only JPEG and PNG images in your ebook. Keeping your file size small will reduce the chance of encountering difficulties in conversion of your book due to large file size.

Convert Images to JPEG

JPEG is the best format for images in the ebooks. You can reduce the size of your ebook file by saving your images in JPEG format.

Creating a Cover Image

A book is judged by its cover!

Your cover image very important because it can have a direct impact on your readers’ purchasing decisions. If you add a high quality cover image, you are increasing the chances that the buyers will pick your book. It also improves customer confidence and boost sales.

AssamKart accepts only JPEG at this moment. Do not compress the image.

Dimensions

Please maintain a an ideal height/width ratio of 1.6 for the cover art. It means

A minimum of 650 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side

Best quality 1600 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side

Color

Color images are better. However, you can also use black and white images.

Uploading Your Cover

Once your book is selected for publication, you will be informed about it. Only after that, you should send us the cover image.
